How to Reach?

Ships and planes departing from Kochi can travel to Lakshadweep Island. Kochi is the entry point to Lakshadweep for tourists.

Kochi is the starting point for flights to Agatti and Bangaram islands. Flights are operated from Kochi by Indian Airlines. The majority of airports in India and overseas are served by flights that continue from Kochi. The airstrip is located solely on Agatti Island. During the fair season (October to May), boats are available from Agatti to Kavaratti and Kadmat. It takes about one hour and thirty minutes to fly from Cochin to Agatti.

A combination of air and sea travel is required to get from mainland India to Lakshadweep. How to get to Lakshadweep is explained in detail below:
1. Pick Your Point of Entry:
Only one airport, on Agatti Island, is accessible to the general public in Lakshadweep. As such, you will usually take a plane to Agatti to start your journey. Though they might take longer and depend on availability, some ships can also make connections from the mainland to different islands.

Make a Travel Arrangement:
Air travel is the most popular and practical method of getting to Lakshadweep. There are flights from major Indian cities like Bengaluru (BLR) and Kochi (COK) to Agatti Airport (AGX). There are frequent flights from airlines like IndiGo, GoAir, and Air India to Agatti. Because there may not be as much availability, make sure to book your flight well in advance.

Permissions to Enter:
Obtain the required Lakshadweep entry permits before making travel plans. All visitors must obtain these permits, which can be done so via the official Lakshadweep tourism website https://samudram.utl.gov.in/ or by visiting the administration’s offices in Kochi, Mumbai, and other approved places.

Upon arrival at Agatti:

You’ll be astounded by the archipelago’s breath-taking beauty as soon as you land at Agatti Airport. You can take inter-island boat transfers from Agatti to further explore other islands.

Transfers between islands:

Lakshadweep has excellent boat connectivity, and regular ferry services are available for island-to-island travel. Make sure to check the ferry schedules ahead of time and make your ticket purchases appropriately. Traveling between islands can be an adventure unto itself, with breath-taking views of the Arabian Sea.

Ships sailing into Lakshadweep

In addition to planes, ships are another means of transportation between Lakshadweep and the mainland. Depending on the island of destination, ships can take anywhere from 14 to 20 hours to reach there from Kochi. It’s important to confirm the schedule and availability as ship services are not as frequent as flights.

Accommodations:

Lakshadweep has a variety of lodging choices, from affordable motels to opulent resorts. To guarantee the greatest selections, make sure to reserve your stay well in advance, particularly during the busiest travel periods.

Local laws and policies:

Learn about the rules, traditions, and laws that apply in Lakshadweep. Observe responsible tourism practices, show consideration for the environment, and honour local customs.

When to travel?

October to mid-May is the ideal time of year to visit Lakshadweep. It rains from mid-May through September. While Lakshadweep’s resorts are open all year round, getting there by ship during the monsoon is challenging. You can travel by air from Kochi to islands like Agatti and Bangaram, which are pleasant even during the monsoon season. It is difficult to get to resorts like Kadmat, Minicoy, and Kavaratti because there is no helicopter or plane service between them. Agatti to Bangaram can only be reached by helicopter during the monsoon season. But the rainy season offers a unique experience when the greenery appears to be greener than before and the mist adds a new shade to the azure waters and lagoons beyond. While ships operate for local passengers only and are closed to tourists during the monsoon, flights are open to tourists throughout the year.
